Last week, the weather was crazy for us here in Flagstaff!   Several tornadoes hit west and north of Flagstaff.  In the town of Belmont, there was quite a bit of damage, but miraculously, no one was hurt.  Here’s what it looked like at our studio the morning the tornadoes hit…  the rare fog was beautiful, little did we know what was happening elsewhere.

Thankfully, it stopped raining and warmed up a little for our workshop on the weekend!  Here’s one of our workshop participants photographing the backlit grass in a meadow at the base of the San Francisco Peaks.  Although a busy weekend- sunrise, sunset, light painting at night, another sunrise- we all had fun!

We spent the weekend scouting areas around Flagstaff where the leaves are changing for our Fall Color in Northern Arizona workshop next weekend.  The change is just starting so most of the areas we like are currently a combination of yellows and greens, but the aspen trunks are just as photogenic as the leaves!  We also found some beautiful bracken fern.  Deciduous trees (those that lose all their leaves every year) respond to the amount of sunlight in a day, which determines when the leaves change color.  In contrast, plants like bracken fern change color primarily in response to temperature.

During the workshop next weekend we’ll have great photo opportunities and learn a little about the natural processes that are part of my favorite season- autumn!

What we call “Monsoon Season” is officially here and the Arizona northland is green and beautiful!  This sunflower next to our back patio is very happy to have some moisture!  The sunflowers in Flagstaff are just starting- soon there will be fields of yellow all around town…  I do love this time of year!

We have a few upcoming workshops-

There’s still room in our August 14-15 workshop, “Where are Those Photos?  Managing your Digital Photo Life with Lightroom.”  If you’d like to learn the best ways to store, find and use your photos, we can help!  See the website for more details…

August Lightroom Workshop

25 September 2010:  Digital Photo Basics, this one is a lot of fun if you’re a beginner or just new to digital!

8-10 October 2010:  Fall Color in Northern Arizona, a lot of field shooting plus critique, review, and classroom.  We always have fun with this one!

As always, please contact us with questions.

Variegated Penstemon

It’s wildflower season in Flagstaff and we have an abundance of them here at our home and studio.  It’s a beautiful time of year and we’ll get even more flowers when the rains come!  Here is a sampling (labeled with common names) I took with my little green point and shoot camera…   see, you CAN get decent shots with just about any camera!  When I help with the workshops, I sort of end up taking the workshop myself…

Ciao!

We had a fun weekend with our workshop participants.  We shot a couple of sunrises, sunset and played with light in the night!  Here are a couple snapshots I took during the workshop- an example of how everyone sees something different to photograph, and one of our sunrise locations.

We’ve also added a couple new workshops at the request of our participants.

July 16-17, 2010- Digital Photo Basics II, the Next Step

August 14-15, 2010- Lightroom- Where are Those Photos?  Managing your Digital Life

October 8-10, 2010- Fall Color in Northern Arizona

Please let us know if you have any questions.  Also, we still have room in our Villages of Provence workshop- if you refer someone who takes it you get a large framed photograph FREE!

Ciao for now!

This weekend is our Photographing the High Country workshop.  We were out checking one of our sunrise spots this morning- absolutely beautiful!  Here are a couple snapshots I took while there.  We’ll spend the weekend photographing some of our favorite spots around the Flagstaff area with our group.

Maybe we’ll see you around!

After doing an art show within days of our return from Europe, I think we’ll take a day off!  Then, this will be our week to “catch up.”

In this post is a mid-day shot of our home base village for our Villages of Provence workshop in September.  In fact, the view from our hotel is very similar to this- pretty spectacular!  They have a wonderful open air market here that we will photograph with our group, as well as beautiful nearby villages, an abbey, vineyards during the harvest, a winery, oh and did I mention the food?  The list goes on…

Home_baseBecause of the drop in the euro, we are able to offer a discount of $500/couple (or $250/person) off the total price of the trip through June 15th.  So now is a great time to sign up!

A tout à l’heure!  (See you later!)
